We consider different types of particles and compare their dynamics when immersed in two turbulent swirling flows: a von Kármán laboratory experiment and a Taylor-Green flow from direct numerical simulations. Our results show that, despite the differences in forcing mechanisms and boundary conditions, the particles' behavior is comparable in both the experiment and the simulations. Using the Lagrangian energy and acceleration spectra and the particles' velocity structure functions, we analyze the effect of the mean flow, showing how it affects the inertial range scaling. The overall similarities open the door to methods to calibrate and test models for particles’ dynamics.
